Jazz Education has been a very important element in the mission statement for Santa Cruz Advocates for the Arts (SCAA) and The Mingus Project from its inception. SCAA has sponsored classroom vocal jazz sessions for grades 4 and 5 at various elementary schools. Encouraging students to scat and swing in singing songs is not only fun for them but is at the foundation of jazz.

The annual Mingus Fall Jazz Clinic and Concert has provided adjudicated performance opportunities, sectional clinics, master classes, and improvisation sessions for both middle and high school jazz students. High school jazz bands have the opportunity to share the stage with various professional bands.

The 2 day April Charles Mingus Hometown Music Festival provides a multitude of opportunities for students to perform, be adjudicated, attend clinics, and learn more of Mingus' early life and humble beginnings. Bands learn how to correctly play the various jazz styles and hear professional artists and bands perform these styles. Through the bilingual Mingus brochure, both students and adults learn how important Charles Mingus is in jazz history. "What is Jazz" programs are being planned for presentation at adult service clubs and in the schools in Santa Cruz County.
