Jazz Education has been a very important element in the mission statement for Santa Cruz Advocates for the Arts (SCAA) and The Mingus Project from its inception.

The annual Mingus Concert has provided adjudicated performance opportunities, sectional clinics, master classes, and improvisation sessions for both middle and high school jazz students. High school jazz bands have the opportunity to share the stage with various professional bands.

The April Charles Mingus Hometown Music Festival provides a multitude of opportunities for students to perform, and learn more of Mingus' early life and humble beginnings.
